OLABO Provides Cold Chain Solution for COVID-19 Vaccine Storage

As of April 13, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 pneumonia surpassed 400 million worldwide and the cumulative number of deaths exceeded 6.2 million. In the current condition of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak, the large-scale production and distribution of the vaccine could be the most effective and long-lasting solution in controlling this pandemic.

Developing an effective vaccine is the first step. Then comes the complications regarding transport and delivery. Due to the vaccines’ temperature sensitivity, shipment and distribution confront a challenging issue.Tinglong Dai, a professor of healthcare operations management at Johns Hopkins University, has publicly stated, “The supply chain for the COVID-19 vaccine will be one of the most complex [pharmaceutical logistics] supply chains ever.”

How will the COVID-19 vaccine be stored and transported? A vaccine is a biological product. To ensure the quality of biologics, they must be stored and transported in a defined cold chain. This should also be the case for COVID-19 vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines are extremely temperature sensitive and need to be stored at -70°C to maintain their efficacy, therefore, both transportation and storage of vaccines are issues that must be addressed.

The cold chain requirements for vaccine storage and transportation are all specified in the Vaccine Control Act as follows.

1. When vaccines are transported, vaccine transport enterprises shall regularly monitor and record the temperature during transportation to ensure that the vaccines are in the prescribed temperature environment.

2. In the process of vaccine storage, the CDC and vaccination units monitor the temperature of the refrigerator where the vaccine is stored.

3. In the process of vaccine use, vaccination units use refrigerators and freezers (packages) to store vaccines, and should close the doors/cover of refrigerators and freezers (packages) in time when storing and taking vaccines, and reduce the number of times of opening refrigerated equipment as much as possible.

All relevant units should strictly comply with the above-mentioned standard requirements in order to keep the vaccines in the cold chain throughout the whole process, and the quality of vaccines can be guaranteed.
